The UCSC Vivarium is responsible for the management of laboratory animal resources at UCSC. This includes the daily care and maintenance of the animals and communication with the researchers to be sure that their needs are being met and that they are following the campus policies regarding animal use.
This website has been initiated to provide researchers with a source for the regulations and policies that pertain to animal use at UCSC, the laboratory animal resources available, and training in laboratory animal use.

Persons who will be using animals for research or teaching should
familiarize themselves with the various policies, rules and guidelines for animal use at UCSC.

To use animals in research or teaching, you must have an approved Animal Use Protocol from CARC.

If you will be working with laboratory animals, you should take time to read through Essentials for Animal Research--A Primer for Research Personnel.
